Son of Hudson sheriff to make court appearance on cocaine charges next week, officials say | - NJ.com: "Arian Perez, the 24-year-old son of Hudson County Sheriff Juan Perez, is scheduled to make his first court appearance on cocaine possession charges on May 28, officials said today.
Perez, a Bayonne resident, was arrested at about 5:30 p.m. May 4 at the Danforth Avenue Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Station in Jersey City after he was found with six vials of suspected cocaine, officials said.
He is scheduled to appear on the possession of controlled dangerous substance charge at Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City on May 28, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Howard Bell said yesterday.
Perez, who was released on a summons on May 4, was arrested along with Kathy Kaufelers, 42, also of Bayonne.
Due to outstanding warrants in Jersey City, Kaufelers, who had seven vials of suspected cocaine in her possession, appeared in CJP court on May 5 and her bail was set at $5,000, officials said.
Officials at the Hudson County jail in Kearny couldn't say today if Kaufelers had made bail.
According to NJ Transit spokeswoman Penny Bassett Hackett, NJ Transit cops initially approached the pair because Perez was smoking, which is prohibited at light rail stations.
Kaufelers volunteered to the cops that she had cocaine and told on Perez, who then confessed to possessing cocaine, Bassett Hackett said.
Sheriff Juan Perez, who recently became a Republican, is running for re-election this year.
He is running in the June 8 Republican primary against Christian Araujo.
Undersheriff Frank X. Schillari is running in the Democratic column."
