Death Penalty News: Bali Nine: Has Scott Rush converted to Islam?: "death-row inmate and Bali nine drug courier Scott Rush has been circumcised by a man who snuck in to Bali's Kerobokan jail and covertly performed the operation in an Islamic prayer room. The procedure, performed on Friday, is commonly part of the ritual when a person converts to Islam, although the religious orientation of Rush - who has previously professed to be a Christian - could not be established last night.Agus Hartawan, Kerobokan's medical officer, confirmed the circumcision in a telephone interview yesterday as he was examining Rush in his prison clinic.
''The wound is healing properly and he is doing fine,'' Dr Hartawan said.He then passed the phone to Rush, who, when asked if he had converted to Islam, said ''No comment'', adding he would be making no further statements.Even so, the Herald understands Rush has been given the Islamic name Suleiman, and has been spending a lot of time in the past two weeks with a small group of Muslim prisoners. The clandestine circumcision was undertaken at the prison's musholla, or prayer room, by members of an Islamic group who entered the prison with medical equipment.According to one source, a white sheet was put up while the operation took place. It is believed a local anaesthetic was used."

$3 million cocaine bust on Turner Turnpike spurs two arrests | NewsOK.com: "Arman Bayatyan, 28, and Arson Bayatyan, 23, are being held in the Lincoln County jail with bail set at $1 million each.
Troopers stopped the rig eastbound on Interstate 44 at mile marker 183 in Creek County, said Chris West, spokesman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He said 150 kilos of cocaine were discovered in the trailer. The two brothers were hauling a load of oranges, he said.
West said this is not a state record for the amount of cocaine retrieved by troopers in a bust, but it is significant enough that the names of the troopers involved are being kept confidential for safety reasons."

Local News | ID couple accused of running drug ring for decades | Seattle Times Newspaper: "James R. 'Slim' O'Neill and his wife, 44-year-old Lecia O'Neill, face federal charges of conspiracy to deliver for allegedly distributing at least 5 kilograms or more of narcotics between January 2000 and May 2010.
O'Neill was in custody after a court appearance Wednesday, while his wife was released with conditions that included drug tests and electronic monitoring.
The office of James O'Neill's attorney, David Dokken, said he was unavailable for comment Thursday.
Court records showed O'Neill reported only about $3,000 in income since 1998, but deposited about $200,000 into bank accounts since February 2004. A Drug Enforcement Agency complaint alleged that Lecia O'Neill made the deposits to the family's bank accounts with the drug money."

Alwyn Gonzalez and Tiffara Bradley charged for cocaine and ammunition | Channel5Belize.com: "And in the Magistrates’ Court, after four days in police custody, thirty year old Alwyn Gonzalez and twenty-six year old Tiffara Bradley were finally arraigned in on drug and ammunition charges. Gonzalez was being sought to face charges along with his common-law-wife Tasha Herrera for over two kilos of cocaine. He was found at an apartment in the King’s Part area over the weekend with Tiffara Bradley, another stash of drugs and thirty-five live rounds of nine millimeter ammunition. Magistrate Sharon Frazer could not grant them bail because of the ammunition offence, but by three-thirty this afternoon Tiffara was successful in securing bail of fifteen thousand dollars at the Supreme Court level. Meanwhile, Gonzalez’ attorney, Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley was unable to get his bail application heard today and he has been remanded to the Hattieville Prison until June twenty-eighth. Gonzalez, however, has not yet been arraigned for the two point four kilos of cocaine for which he was originally being sought. That’s because Magistrate Frazer decided to withhold the charge until he is served with a charge sheet. His girlfriend, Herrera, was arraigned last Friday and is now being held at the Community Rehabilitation Department for prenatal care after giving birth on May twelfth."

Drug smuggling figures, investigators take stand - News - Virgin Islands Daily News: "Craig Claxton, Walter Ells, Vernon Fagan, Kelvin Moses, Dorian Swan and Kerry Woods are charged with conspiring to distribute cocaine. Prosecutors allege that the men are members of a multinational drug organization that moved tons of cocaine from South America to Tortola to St. Thomas then to the mainland United States.
The six men were arrested in October 2005 during a roundup of suspected drug dealers in Savan near the former Red Ball grocery store.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Delia Smith, the lead prosecutor, and her colleague Nolan Paige are relying on the testimony of several convicted felons who have signed cooperation agreements with prosecutors to testify “whenever called upon to do so.”
Christopher Swaney, 32, of Greensboro, N.C., is serving a 145-month jail term for trafficking cocaine. He was indicted in mid-2007 after being found with 300 kilograms of cocaine. He pleaded guilty to that charge and was sentenced in 2008. As part of his plea deal, Swaney entered into a cooperation agreement in February 2007 “to debrief agents of my role in the conspiracy, and I would not be held accountable for the things I said personally to the agents,” Swaney said.

Swaney said he became involved in drug distribution in 1996 when he was just 17 or 18 years old."

Star: "Malcolm MCairns was deputy headmaster of Hillcrest HighSchool and later Kloof High School in Durban, few would have suspected he would end up in a South American jail one day, sharing a rat-infested cell with gangsters and seedy transgender bisexuals.

It was while he languished in prison in Argentina that he wrote his autobiography, in an attempt to stop others from falling into the same trap.

Eleven years ago, Cairns, now 63, had it all, on the face of it anyway. He was a respected teacher with a 38-year career teaching at South Africa's most prestigious schools."

Prosecutor: NJ schoolyard deaths part of gang test | The Daily Caller - Breaking News, Opinion, Research, and Entertainment: "NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The execution-style slayings of three friends in a New Jersey schoolyard nearly three years ago were carried out to test the mettle of an aspiring gang member, a prosecutor told jury members Wednesday as the first trial stemming from the attacks neared a conclusion.
Four of the six defendants were summoned to the Mount Vernon School playground on the night of Aug. 4, 2007, by defendant Rodolfo Godinez “because he saw the opportunity of soft targets in an isolated area,” Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Thomas McTigue said during closing arguments.
McTigue focused on Godinez’s statement to authorities in Maryland, where he was arrested two weeks after the killings, in which Godinez told police he was a ranking member of MS-13, the El Salvadoran-based street gang. The statement was played for jurors during the trial."

Son of Hudson sheriff to make court appearance on cocaine charges next week, officials say | - NJ.com: "Arian Perez, the 24-year-old son of Hudson County Sheriff Juan Perez, is scheduled to make his first court appearance on cocaine possession charges on May 28, officials said today.

Perez, a Bayonne resident, was arrested at about 5:30 p.m. May 4 at the Danforth Avenue Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Station in Jersey City after he was found with six vials of suspected cocaine, officials said.

He is scheduled to appear on the possession of controlled dangerous substance charge at Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City on May 28, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Howard Bell said yesterday.

Perez, who was released on a summons on May 4, was arrested along with Kathy Kaufelers, 42, also of Bayonne.

Due to outstanding warrants in Jersey City, Kaufelers, who had seven vials of suspected cocaine in her possession, appeared in CJP court on May 5 and her bail was set at $5,000, officials said.

Officials at the Hudson County jail in Kearny couldn't say today if Kaufelers had made bail.

According to NJ Transit spokeswoman Penny Bassett Hackett, NJ Transit cops initially approached the pair because Perez was smoking, which is prohibited at light rail stations.

Kaufelers volunteered to the cops that she had cocaine and told on Perez, who then confessed to possessing cocaine, Bassett Hackett said.

Sheriff Juan Perez, who recently became a Republican, is running for re-election this year.
He is running in the June 8 Republican primary against Christian Araujo.

Undersheriff Frank X. Schillari is running in the Democratic column."
