Jose David Portillo-Lopez, 39, a medical doctor from Mexico, and Juan Bautista Beltran-Lopez, 38, received 87 and 84 months in prison, respectively.

“In December 2007, after entering the U.S. near Yuma, Ariz., the pair met with affiliates of a Colombian drug-trafficking organization. Each was given a pair of hiking books whose soles had been modified to conceal over a kilogram of heroin. Beltran-Lopez and Portillo-Lopez then joined with other smugglers to transport the heroin to New York City. DEA agents tracked the defendants’ movement across the country. As the defendants were arriving at their final delivery point — a hotel near Times Square — the agents arrested them and seized the heroin concealed in their footwear.”"

Phuong Thi Tran, 39, of Mississauga, Ontario, "operated a network of smugglers who distributed large amounts of ecstasy" to drug dealers in the United states.
Tran has been charged in Michigan as well as Pennsylvania. Her organization is accused of delivering 100,000 ecstasy pills to dealers in Philadelphia and Boston.Tran pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ecstasy and methamphetamines and one count of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute ecstasy. The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the DEA, and other law enforcement agencies from both nations. Tran will be sentenced in June.

John W. Bradberry, 39, of York, York County; and Terrance D. Pemberton, 39, of Harrisburg; were stopped last Friday around 12:20 a.m. around mile marker 57, state police at Fogelsville said.Police said the men were pulled over because the tint on the windows was illegal. Two pounds and six ounces of cocaine were seized along with drug paraphernalia.Both were arraigned on charges of possession, possession with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal conspiracy and committed to Lehigh County jail under $50,000 bail.Pemberton, who also is known as Eric M. Lang, remains in jail. Bradberry posted bail the same day of his arrest and was released, according to court records.

A search of the vehicle netted 28 kilograms of cocaine, officials said.They were arrested Oct. 22 after a federal grand jury indicted them on the drug trafficking charges. A later search of their home in Pearland uncovered a cocaine processing lab, weapons, ledgers used in the drug trafficking and a money counting machine.Investigating the couple are the Drug Enforcement Administration's Galveston office, the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office and the Beaumont Police Department.
