U.S. Charges Nine With Attempting to Build Drug Smuggling Route to Europe Via Liberia - WSJ.com: "charged were Chigbo Umeh of Nigeria, Konstantin Yaroshenko of Russia, Jorge Salazar Castaño of Colombia, and Nathaniel French and Kudufia Mawuko of Ghana. All the defendants except Mr. Salazar Castaño pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.
According to U.S. prosecutors, Mr. Umeh was the broker who assisted various trafficking groups, while Mr. Salazar Castaño was the supply coordinator based in Colombia and Spain, and Mr. Yaroshenko was a pilot and air-transport expert. Messrs. French and Mawuko provided logistics to help maritime drug shipments, prosecutors said.
In a May 2009 meeting, recorded by the DEA, Messrs. Umeh and Salazar Castaño discussed paying Mr. Sirleaf and his deputy $400,000 to ensure safe passage of about 700 kilograms (about 1,500 pounds) of cocaine from South America to Liberia, according to the indictments. The men said they previously had sent 900 kilos of cocaine into nearby Guinea-Bissau."
