Mexico announces arrest of top heroin smuggler - People's Daily Online: "arrested Carlos Ramon Castro, who smuggled heroin into 10 U.S. cities, with the intention of extraditing him to the U.S. authorities.
Castro, known as El Cuate (The Friend), 'had income of close to 2 million U.S. dollars a month,' Ramon Pequeno, head of the SSP's anti-drug unit, told a press conference. He regularly sent shipments of between 68 and 90 kg to the United States.
Mexico's last major heroin arrest was Jose Antonio Medina, known as the King of Heroin, in March. Castro and Medina were both considered independents, unaffiliated with Mexico's major drug cartels, which tend to focus on smuggling cocaine, marihuana and amphetamines.
Fighting drug smuggling has been one of the government's top priorities since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon took office."
